Holmwrangle Hatchery:
Water source - fully protected borehole and spring water supply.
A pure disease free water supply utilising the sandstone aquifiers of the Eden Valley. Borehole water pumped from a depth of 100 metres at a constant temperature of 10 C. Spring water rising from the sandstone flows at a consistent rate with a temperature variation between 6 and 11 C. Both sources provide high quality.
Haweswater Smolt Unit:
Water source - Haweswater reservoir.
The reservoir provides a quality disease free water supply, and drinking water for in excess of 8 million people. Lakeland have the unique ability to control the water temperature via a surface water intake, thus providing an ideal environment for juvenile salmon.
Lakeland is very conscious of environmental issues, which is why sophisticated water treatment procedures are undertaken in order to meet demanding standards.
The balance in the ecosystem is constantly assessed in order to provide an abundance of invertebrate, fish and bird life. Our two hatcheries in Cumbria are home to a huge population of slow worms and newts. The farms operate in harmony with otters, badgers, kingfishers, swallows, dippers and woodpeckers to name but a few.
Lakeland operations are totally reliant on maintaining water quality to the benefit of all.
